It's been a noisy few days at Casa Charbonneau. In addition to my sniffling, sneezing and grumbling about itchy, tired eyes, the Lad has had a head-on collision with the Kleenex box. For the past few weeks, he's been waking up to a torrent of sneezes; 10 to 15 at a go. On Monday night, Matthew woke up around 11:00, all congested with red, puffy eyes and couldn't get back to sleep. We'd given him some children's Claritin and suggested he read until he was too tired to stay awake. This worked and he went to sleep around midnight.
Yesterday, I picked the Lad up from daycare and took him to the doctor's office for a check-up. Without knowing exactly what he's allergic to (we figure ragweed, as it's in season), the nurse practitioner (NP) wrote him a prescription for Flonase, a nasal spray that Jennifer uses for her allergies in the Spring. Once again, the house has been infused with the smell of lilacs—not the pleasant fragrance of real flowers, mind you, but that not-so-lovely artificial smell of lilacs.
The Lad had a much better sleep last night and I've yet to pick him up to see how he fared today but I suspect he'll be pretty good. He seems to be accepting the fact that this is something he'll need to deal with every Fall. In fact, our last visit to the doctor was for this very same reason, last year on September 2nd.
Hopefully, we're over the comments like: "Why doesn't Marina get allergies?! It just isn't fair!" No, Matthew, few things are.
Matthew's aunt, Anne, used to query why she should be the one to have asthma et., etc., It's all in the family...............unfortunately.
Glad there is something to help him. BTW I kind of like that lilac smell.

I had this problem around his age and found out later that hay fever was the culprit, not a nice feeling, I remember being very sick for a few weeks and this unfortunately lasted many years. Be strong Matthew it's not dangerous but very annoying.
